Even though the brain is not actually a muscle the brain does need to be exercised regularly so that it will continue growing and developing nerve connections that help improve memory. While studying the brain and how memory works scientist realized there were things that could be done to improve your long and short term memory.
This can be as simple as paying closer attention to details during certain times, for instance, when you meet someone for the first time. If you are nervous or even distracted you might not catch a person’s name which will make it more difficult to remember later on.
The time frame for a memory to travel from short-term to long-term memory is thought to be 8 seconds. Quickly going over information as you hear it the first time may affect your ability to remember it later.
Another technique is over-learning, which is learning by repeating something over and over until it is stored in the long-term memory. This technique is commonly used by children and is used in song form often.
Like riding a bike, the other techniques may seem complicated at first but once you get the hang of it they become as natural as any other process.
Many differing memory claims have been made over the years. Researchers have said, to help those who need a quick fix, that if you move your eyes from side to side for thirty seconds. It has been claimed that chewing gum can help memory to improve.
A healthful diet is important for all sorts of body functions as well as memory. If you do not have enough of the proper nutrients your memory will not work as well as it should.
There is obviously no one method or technique that will improve memory for everyone. However, it is important to "exercise" the brain, otherwise the adage "use it or lose it" definitely applies to the brain.
