How to Reverse the Aging Process

By: Debra Thompson

Aging is part of the normal process of living. Most traditional communities treat their aged with reverence. One almost gets the impression that life ends at forty, at least judging by the media, and many women feel the pressure to maintain a youthful appearance. When the emphasis on youth results in endangering health over time, we must take a hard look at our priorities.

There’s absolutely nothing abnormal about wanting to look as youthful as you can, and to avoid activities or conditions that contribute to premature aging. Don't fault your genes if bad choices are the culprit. You can't change your heritage, so key on what you can affect. Making smart decisions early and often offer you the best chance to live a long and healthy life.

Keeping as young as you can isn't difficult. Take heed of the most well-known ways to avoid premature aging — things under your control.

Eat what your body requires, and no more. Don't keep going until you feel full. Food is intended to fuel our bodies. It should be pleasurable, but not entertainment. Take a five pound block around with you for a day to become aware of how tough the excess fat is on you. Learn to become sensitive to how your body handles various foods. Fasting is an ideal way to clear the body of toxins.

If you smoke, quit. Smoking is one of the major causes of premature aging in women — to list just one consequence. Smoking will fill your system with poisons that build up with time, and the consequences will show in your skin.

Exercise! If you are toned up and fit, you'll look years younger. So get active. Start a regular walking program, or start toning, or get a stretching DVD and use it often and you’ll delay the aging process. Ballroom dancing or jogging are good choices. If you have physical limitations, consult your doctor about physical therapists in your area — they can tell you good ways to implement a long-term fitness plan. You'll look and feel better if you begin a regular exercise routine.

Don't use artifical tanning beds. The skin is your largest organ - handle it with care. The sun is good for you, so get a real tan, when it isn't too hot, and in moderation.

Make sure you get plenty of plain water. If you are aware you don’t drink sufficient pure water, you know where to begin. Fluids move nutrients through the body and toxins out. Don't discount the value of pure water to health and vitality.

Get sufficient rest. Sleep is when our body rejuvenates (”restores youth”) itself. It’s crucial to get plenty of sleep if you want to prevent premature aging. Generally, experts recommend six to eight hours a night, and it’s thought that the more sleep you get prior to midnight, the more effective your sleep will be.

There is no secret potion for staying young. A little wisdom early on can pay off in the long run.
