In the 20th century, Joseph Pilates developed a physical fitness system which cam to be named after him, i.e. the Pilates Method or simply Pilates. He personally referred to this method as Contrology as it encouraged the use of mind to control the muscles. Pilates authored 2 books on this method of exercise and from this simple start there are now hundreds of them.
Pilates conditions the body, tones and strengthens the muscles and promotes healthy, deep, breathing. The focus is on quality, not quantity. Muscles are worked precisely and efficiently but no more than is necessary.
The Benefits of Pilates
The benefits derived from Pilates are numerous. Here are some of them:
*Toned and lean body.
* A stronger and healthier back.
* Increased strength without adding muscle bulk.
* Improved posture.
* More efficient respiratory and circulatory systems.
*Increased joint mobility.
* Less incidence of back pain.
* Relaxation and stress relief.
Basically, the buttocks, back and abdomen are targeted to strengthen the body core so that they act as a firm support system for the spine.
Pilates is a fantastic antidote to the stresses and strains of everyday life. The mind is so engaged whilst the exercises are being performed that you won't be able to think about much else. Afterwards you shouldn't feel tired or have aches and pains but, rather, should experience a sense of calm.
How you choose to practice Pilates is up to you. You can follow a program from a book, DVD or video or attend a class in you local area. The advantage of going to a class is that you will get instant feedback from the instructor who will tell you if your body alignment is incorrect. This way you will get maximum benefit in the shortest time.
Why not start your day with a Pilates workout and prime your body with extra energy for the day ahead? Or, end your day with the exercises to relieve tired muscles and focussed breathing to relax you, ready for a good night's sleep.
