The Real Reason You Haven't Lost Your Weight

By: Steve Gray

Any casual walk in public these days will make it it very apparent why there is such a huge demand for diets in America. Did you know that over 60% of Americans are over weight and over 30% are obese? With numbers like those, more and more people are looking for a viable and sustainable answer for weight loss.

Here's the sobering news. Most diets fail. Regardless of the program, and regardless of how serious you are, your next attempt will likely end up like all the rest. But here's the happy part. You can do something that will dramatically shift the odds in your favor.

What's the difference between glass being half full or half empty? Perspective, right? With diets though its not an issue of positive thinking, its an issue of time expectation. When we are lead to diets that promise "overnight" success we are setting ourselves up for failure. So what would happen if you changed your time expectation?

Long term dieting success is not about the fad diet. Its about changing your habits and developing a more healthy lifestyle. Yes that means that scary word "change". But when you develop healthy habits, you begin to perform them subconsciously and without thinking. Replacing bad habits with good ones is key.

I wish the answer was more magical. Its always more fun that way. A magical solution that solves all our weight issues. We like things easy, and losing weight is no different. But having searched for that magic pill before, I can tell you that when you realize one important thing is when you realize dieting success.

I didn't put the weight on over night or in a month or in 3 months. As a 5'10" male, 220lbs didn't feel too good, and when I was huffing and puffing at the top a flight of stairs, I knew it had to change. I also realized that my ideal weight of 170-175 was 45+ pounds lighter and a long way off from 220. And that was the key.

Just do the math. An aggressive 10 pounds a month would take almost five months to lose. You may not know it, but 1 pound of fat has 3500 calories. And to burn extra fat you need to expend 500 calories above you normal metabolic needs. 7 Days of burning an extra 500 calories is only 1 pound a week. 10 pounds a month would take 1250 calories a day!! So start your diet off right with a realistic expectation.

And if you are still with me now, there is hope for you. Because once you realize that it needs to be a long term solution, you will set goals that are achievable. Start with 1 pound a week and see what happens. Most likely you will succeed and feed good about the process to try for more. Maybe you shoot for two pounds a week the next month. The numbers don't matter, sticking with it does.

At this point I hope you realize that what diet you choice is far less important than how you approach it. In the end, a diet will get you going in the right direction, but you will keep yourself going in the right direction with realistic expectations, changing your habits, and making healthier and better choices.
