Many issues lie behind alcohol cravings and they involve a long process over time. For many this time line begins at an early age such as our teens. We are told that alcohol is bad and even the law does not allow anyone under the age of 21 to make an alcohol purchase. For many of our teens and young adults under 21, this only serves to make alcohol seem more attractive and even "cool" to try to obtain and drink.
Later on people grab a bottle of booze to feel better, gain more confidence in a social setting or to forget about their problems. Since the alcohol makes them feel better, at least temporarily, they start to crave it.
Drinking on a regular basis becomes a matter of habit after a while and like most bad habits, it is an easy one to deny or avoid. Soon when confronted with a problem or an uncomfortable situation, you may find that bottle in your hand without any conscious thought.
Quickly the body can adjust to the steady or ever increasing levels of alcohol when consumed on a regular basis. Your body gets used to the presence of alcohol in the blood stream and will experience withdrawal symptoms when drinking is stopped. For some these symptoms are mild, for many they can be severe.
Alcohol can be extremely dangerous to your health and wellbeing. The most familiar disease related with alcohol addiction is liver cirrhosis, in which liver cells die and the tissues harden as a result of drinking. Cirrhosis is not however the only danger to your body.
Alcohol can also lead to heart disease, stroke, dementia and brain damage, cancer (including liver cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer in women). Not to mention the addition of the perils of drinking and driving.
If you desire the occasional glass of wine or beer, just make sure you are aware of the craving and make the responsible decision to have only a glass, or skip it altogether. Don't give in to your cravings or feelings by allowing them to make that choice for you.
If you feel as if you have developed an addiction to alcohol and cannot control your cravings, please find help immediately. Alcohol addiction as a serious condition and the quicker you seek help, the better chance you will have at overcoming your addiction and regaining command over your alcohol cravings.
