Many experts agree that the key to healthy eating is the tried and tested advice of balance, variety and moderation in your diet. What this means is that you can eat a wide variety of foods without getting too many calories or too much of any one nutrient. Below we provide you with some advice on eating healthy whilst still enjoying the foods that you eat.
1. Your body needs more than 40 different vitamins and nutrients to keep healthy. Unfortunately there is no one food source that can give us all these. The first thing you can do is to look at the food information panels on the foods packaging. this will tell you how much of each vitamin and nutrient is included. It will also tell you how many calories are contain with the food.
2. Start to add more meals that include Vegetables , fruit and whole grains to your regular diet. It has recently been discovered that the vast majority of Americans don't eat enough of these foods. By finding tasty recipes based around them you can start o include more fruit, vegetables and whole grains in your diet on a regular basis.
3. look at the size of your portions. Try to reduce the size of each serving. this will reduce calories and leave you less full so you can finish a meal with some fruit.
4. Eat your meals regularly. Don't skip breakfast and keep to set mealtimes. Try to add a light snack between meals. This will ensure that you keep hunger at bay. When you are hungry you start to crave sugar and snacks full of fatty substances.
5. You do not need to eliminate but instead reduce certain foods. So if your favorite foods are high in fat, salt or sugar then eat them in moderation.
6. Switch to low fat foods. Skimmed and low fat dairy products don't taste much different to the full fat versions. Also try lean cuts of meat. This will quickly help to reduce your fat intake.
Eating smaller portions of your favorite food can prove to be difficult if you eat out often. To overcome this you can ask for smaller portions or ask to take the left overs home in a doggy bag where you can enjoy them again a few days later.
Changing to a healthy diet need not be a difficult or stressful experience. Don't try to change over all at once. Small changes over a period of time will prove to be much easier to achieve than trying to change all at once. Just remember that your aim is to lead a more healthier life and you will soon be on your way to better health.
